50 10 pomodoro for deep work

A 50 10 pomodoro is a longer sitting than the classic 25 minute block. Fifty minutes of focus, ten minutes off, and a twenty minute pause after every third block.

When fifty minutes is the right block

Twenty-five minutes is a good length when the work starts hard. It is a poor length when you have only just found the thread. A 50 minute focus block gives a draft, a problem set, or a design pass room to get past the warm-up. The ten minute break is long enough to stand, refill a glass, and look out a window, and short enough that the thread is still there when you sit down. After three of those blocks, the long break is twenty minutes, so the morning is not one unbroken stretch. Put this page on the screen you are not typing on. The digits stay large, the phase name says whether you are in focus or a break, and the dots show which block of the three you are on. The chime marks the change if sound is unlocked. If fifty minutes is too long for the task in front of you, the classic page is one tap back, and the plain timer is there when you want a single countdown with no break attached.

FAQ

Why is the long break after three blocks, not four?

Three fifties is two and a half hours of focus before the longer pause. Four would push the round past three hours, which is a long time to stay in one task. The setting is still yours. Change Long break every if you want a fourth block before the twenty minute pause.

Can I start the break myself instead of automatically?

Yes. Auto start is off on this page, so a finished focus block sits on the short break until you press Start. Turn Auto start on if you want the next phase to begin at the chime. The lengths stay 50, 10, and 20 either way.
